Lubrication, die

These products lubricate die eyes and are used for conditions such as dry eyes and eye irritation caused by inadequate tear production.

Most topical dni act on die skin but are not absorbed tiirough die skin. These dni are used to soften, disinfect, or lubricate die sMii. A few topical dru are enzymes that have die ability to remove die superficial debris, such as die dead sMii and purulent matter present in skin ulcerations. Otiier topical dru are used to treat minor, superficial skin infections. The various forms of topical applications and locations of use are described in Display 2-2.

Surface modifiers can be added to the talc by the talc supplier to improve or reduce various talc-polymer interactions. The choice and concentration of the modifier depends on the desired benefit in the talc composite. Silanes and titanates are used to improve the bond between the talc surface and the polymer. Other surface modifiers, such a glycols and sorbates, are used to improve dispersion of the talc in the polymer. Stearates, such as zinc or calcium stearate, are added to the talc or mixed into the compound to reduce die drool and lubricate die surfaces. Epoxies can be used to minimize interactions between talc and certain stabilizers or metal impurities. These surface-modified talc products are generally more expensive than untreated talc. The decision to use a surface-treated talc is based on cost-performance balance. Sometimes it is more cost-effective to add any additives during the compounding operation than have them added to the talc by the talc supplier.

The extrusion method using a lubricated die [104,105] allows the measurements of systems with viscosity levels as low as 10 Pa.sec. Thus, it can be used for extensional viscosity determinations in the case of nylon and polyester which are often spim to make synthetic fibers. Higher extensional rates, even 200 sec" are also achievable in this apparatus [104,105], thus making ttie information relevant for the polymer processing industries involved in fiber spiiming.
