Lower recurrent hemorrhage

A rare disease, first described by Waldenstrom in 1943 (60), is characterized by recurrent purpura (capillary hemorrhage) of the lower extremities, increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and elevated levels of an immunoglobulin which is nearly always IgG. The condition is benign but there are reports of subsequent development of multiple myeloma. The disease generally occurs in females and is frequently associated with the presence of other antibodies, such as antinuclear factors or, less frequently, an IgM rheumatoid factor. An IgG fraction present in high concentration in the serum of these patients has anti-IgG activity this results in the formation of circulating immune complexes... [Pg.425]
