Low-Sensitivity Magnetometer

Low-Sensitivity Magnetometer (LSM) The LSM is the most commonly used instrument for UXO location because it is inexpensive, effective, and easy to use. LSMs used for UXO detection typically are the dual-fluxgate type originally developed for the detection of underground utilities. Completely nonintrusive, LSMs do not emit any electromagnetic radiation, which is a potential source of initiation for some electrically initiated UXO. A minor disadvantage of LSMs is that they detect only ferrous items nonferrous UXO, however, is fairly rare. LSMs... [Pg.178]

UXO specialists surveying an area for UXO typically begin by marking the site boundaries with stakes. They then divide the area into 5 ft wide search lanes by stringing surveyors lines across the site to stakes at each end of the survey area. The UXO survey team then uses the low-sensitivity magnetometer to examine each survey lane. [Pg.183]
