Love, Addiction, Psychological Balance, etc

Let us start with falling in love or romance. It has been known for some time that the love life of insects is regulated by small molecules called pheromones. This is true also for mammals. But, what about love in humans Well, humans may not be an exception to this chemical control of love. Thus, even though the chemical details of the emotional map are not yet worked out precisely, it is becoming gradually evident that emotional life is written in our genes and is coded by specific molecules made in the brain.l l Indeed, our brains are chemically wired. Some of these neurochemicals are neurotransmitters, others are neuromodulators that regulate the [Pg.2]

SCHEME 1.1 The molecule PEA and the meaning of the acronym. The constituent atoms, C, H, and N, and their names are shown alongside the molecule. Phenyl (P) is the hexagon with C and CH groups. [Pg.3]

We shall learn in the next lecture to construct molecules from atoms. At this point you should not be concerned about the excessive jargon I am using at times this is a scientific language, and we shall learn it as we go along. Right now, let us return to [Pg.3]

The effects of PEA on human behavior have led to the hypothesis (henceforth the psychochemical hypothesis ) that PEA is associated with the event of falling in [Pg.3]

Even though this idea is very simplistic and may stiU be in the realm of speculation, nevertheless, the molecular regulation of emotions is well established. As such, it is interesting to go over the psychochemical hypothesis, since it might contain some seminal truth considering the role of PEA in regulating emotional impact. [Pg.4]
