Liver synthesis

Fibric acid derivatives, the third group of antihyperlipi-demic drugs, work in a variety of ways. Clofibrate (Atromid-S), acts to stimulate the liver to increase breakdown of very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) to low-density lipoproteins (LDL), decreasing liver synthesis of... [Pg.410]

Nutrient homeostasis cell uptake of glucose (especially important in adipose and muscle), amino acids (all cells) and fatty acids stimulation of glycolysis but inhibition of gluconeogenesis (liver), synthesis of glycogen (liver and muscle), triglyceride (liver and adipose) and protein (all cells) ... [Pg.116]

This disease has mainly been encountered in Jamaica. Severe fatty liver with hepatomegaly developed together with early ascites (but no jaundice) and an increasing deterioration in liver synthesis performance. Death occurs in liver coma. Morphologically, there was evidence of fibrosis as well as veno-occlusive disease, features which suggested a combination of protein-deficient nutrition and phytotoxins. [Pg.588]

Liver disease can also cause hypoalbuminemia due to decreased liver synthesis of albumin. For drugs that are extensively bound to albumin, such as phenytoin, an enhanced risk of drug toxicity could occur because of the increase in free drug concentration. [Pg.49]

When protein synthesis is expressed in fractional terms there is no indication of the contribution that the different subcellular components make to the total liver synthesis. However, the quantities of protein in each fraction did not differ significantly at any time before or after feeding. Expressing the results in absolute terms reveals that soluble proteins in the post-mitochondrial fraction have the highest rates of synthesis and all the fractions increase with feeding (Fig. 7). It should be noted that all these experiments were carried out with labelled phenylalanine incorporation over 40-min periods and our results indicate that newly synthesised export proteins, e.g. albumin, do not appear in the fishes plasma until at least 1 h after radiolabelled amino acid injection. [Pg.10]

It is now well established that very low density and low density lipoproteins are synthesized in the liver. Data supporting this conclusion have been obtained from studies on plasma triglyceride metabolism, the fatty liver and its origin, and protein biosynthesis in the liver. Many of the studies used animals which have a somewhat different lipoprotein pattern than the human. Metabolic sequences differ in detail between species and unique model systems are required (Farquhar et al. 1965). Nevertheless fundamental aspects of lipoprotein metabolism such as liver synthesis have been confirmed in several animals. [Pg.176]
