Liver poison

Fish Liver Poisoning. The livers of large fish species such as sharks, tunas, and sea bass may cause intense headaches, vomiting, facial edema, fever, and severe desquamation. Onset of symptoms is from 30 minutes to 12 hours. All of these fishes contain extremely high levels of vitamin A in their livers. As the fish grows, the concentration of vitamin A in the liver increases (94-96). ... [Pg.46]

In complementary experiments Billing and Weinbren (cited in BIO) infused bilirubin in amounts sufficient to saturate the capacity of the liver to excrete the pigment and noted that, in addition to bilirubin, pigment I but no pigment II accumulated in the plasma. The liver poisons ethionine and icterogenin also cause an accumulation of pigment I but not of pigment II in the blood of experimental animals (B13). [Pg.278]

In connection with the nearly universal use of insecticides that are liver poisons, it is interesting to note the sharp rise in hepatitis that began through the 1950s and is continuing a fluctuating climb. [Pg.59]

DMF is a powerful liver poison and any person making skin contact with it will be affected however quickly they wash. The noticeable symptom is severe flushing when drinking even a small amount of alcohol. Recovery will take about a week and, during that period, alcohol should be avoided completely. Long-term exposure to DMF vapour wiU produce the same symptoms and should be treated as an urgent indication that ventilation is unsatisfactory. [Pg.407]

According to recent papers, the action of liver poisons like carbon tetrachloride and white phosphorus in the induction of fatty livers is similar to that indicated for ethionine. Here too the fatty liver is associated with low plasma lipid levels. A short time after the injection of carbon tetrachloride into the animal, marked dilatations of the cystemae of the endoplasmic reticulum are discemable (Smuck-LER and Bend ITT 1963). This is the site of protein and lipoprotein synthesis and of the presumed triglyceride secretory mechanism (Byers and Friedman 1960). Reck-NAGEL and Lombardi (1961) have suggested that this structure is the key focus of carbon tetrachloride action and its destruction the cause of fat accumulation. [Pg.63]
