Little boy

Two atomic bombs named "Fat Han and "Little Boy." The latter was used to destroy Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II. (Library of Congress)... [Pg.852]

But it was so hard. Ned I loved, but it was Antony who saw him every day. Dickon was my little boy, and since my baby George was taken by God, he was my only son still to hang on my skirts, and hold my hand, and show me a book or a catapult or a cut knee, as once Thomas and Richard did all those years ago among the apple trees and cornfields of Grafton. [Pg.322]

The Little Boy bomb initially killed approximately 70,000 people and injured another 70,000. By the end of 1945, the death toll rose to 140,000 due to radiation sickness. Five years later, the death toll was 200,000. The initial death rate from Fat Man was 40,000 with 60,000 injured the death rate eventually rose to about 140,000. [Pg.37]

With apologies to Engene Field s Little Boy Blue )... [Pg.53]

My theory as to why this is the case relates to the difference in the way boys and girls are raised. When men were little boys, the culture emphasizes winning and achieving. There isn t much reward for second place. [Pg.117]

There are two fountains, each spouting a clear, strong stream. One of them, the Little Boy s Fountain [Fonte Pueri], has hot water the other, having cold water, is called the Stream of the Virgin [Virginis Linda]. [Pg.251]

Karl Karlovich Klaus spent his infancy and boyhood in a harsh, unkind environment. He was bom in the Baltic-Russian city of Dorpat on January 23, 1796. His father, a talented painter whose pictures later adorned Klaus s library, died in 1800. Soon after her husband s death the mother married another artist, and she, in turn, died when the boy was only five years old. Her second husband soon married again, and thus the little boy found himself a strange child in a strange home, left without affection and almost without care (36). [Pg.440]

Hiroshima was destroyed on 6 August 1945 by Little Boy, a uranium bomb brought to critical mass by firing one piece of uranium at another using a gun mechanism. This brought the pieces to critical mass quickly enough to avoid the chain reaction blowing the... [Pg.104]

Having a nice, rectangular pasture or yard is fine and dandy, but what if you need to keep the little boy sheep separated from the little girl sheep — or some other such arrangement ... [Pg.267]

II. On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb (nicknamed as Little Boy ) was dropped by an American B-29 bomber (Enola Gay) over Hiroshima, Japan instantly killing more than 70000 people. On August 9, 1945, the USA dropped a second atomic bomb (nicknamed Fat Man ) killing some 40000 people in Nagasaki, Japan. Because of this large-scale devastation, such nuclear explosive devices have never again been used in a war. [Pg.56]

Gun method A simple technique for assembling a supercritical mass is to shoot one piece of fissile material as a projectile against a second piece as a target. This method was used in the Little Boy weapon which was detonated over Hiroshima. Gun method can only be used for U235 because of the relatively long time it takes to combine the materials. However, this method is now of only historical importance and is practically obsolete for technologically advanced nations. [Pg.56]

First, the person who is to take the seeds must solemnly commit himself to take them, and to go out and cut the branches with the seed. There must also he a vow to the Virgin in favor of the sick person, so that the seed will take effect with him. If there is no such vow, there will be no effect. The sick person must seek out a child of seven or eight years, a little girl if the patient is a man, a little boy if the patient is a woman. The child should be freshly bathed and in clean clothes, all fresh and clean. The seed is then measured out, the amount... [Pg.293]

The atomic bomb named Little boy which was dropped on Hiroshima weighed 4,500 kg, had a diameter of 75 cm and a length of 3.5 m. [Pg.73]

A multiplicity of factors contribute to the conflicts and confusion in little boys. Respect for authority in general is on the decline in society. Boys are culturally encouraged, and even trained, to suppress their tender ( feminine ) sides. Meanwhile, the culture too often encourages them to feel and to act domineering and hostile toward girls and women. These lessons are imprinted through TV and other entertainment media and reinforced in sports and on the playground as well as in some families. [Pg.272]

Within an hour after taking a single dose of a stimulant drug, any child tends to become more obedient, narrower in focus, and more willing to concentrate on humdrum tasks and instructions. Parents in conflict with a little boy can hand him a pill, knowing he will soon be more docile. [Pg.303]

My twin sons were still in preschool when I began writing the first edition in the fall of 1999 and now they are outgoing sixth graders. Their soccer games and piano recitals continue to keep me grounded in reality, and their little boy humor keeps me laughing when I most need it. [Pg.1271]
