The ether extract is evaporated to dryness to give about 500 mg of a crude product. From the ether solution there is obtained about 290 mg of yellow crystals, MP 220° to 236°C which is 17a,20,20,21-bis(methylenedioxy)-11 (3-formyloxy-2-hydroxy-methylene-6,16a-di-methyl-4,6-pregnadiene-3-one. The analytical sample is recrystallized from ethyl acetate and has a melting point of 249° to 255°C, [oIq -217°, I R 5.81 and 8.37 ji. From the mother liquor is obtained about 127 mg of 17a,20,20-21-bis(methylenedioxy)-11(3-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethylene-6,16a-dimethyl-4,6-pregnadiene-3-one. The analytical sample is recrystallized from ether and has a melting point of 200° to 204°C, [alo -197°, IR 6.05 to 6.2 and 6.4 jd. [Pg.391]

Mettauer a Aperient Solution. Take of socotriue aloes, 24 ounces super-carbonate of soda, 6 drachms water, 4 pints compound spirits of lavender, 2 ounces. After digesting 14 days, the clear liquor may be either decanted or allowed to remain. Age is said to improve both the pow-ers and taste of the solution. The common dose is I drachm which may bo increased, if necessary, to an ounce. It is recommended as a raluablo remedy in most forms of constipation, taken soon after meals. [Pg.311]

Thibault s Balaam. Myrrh, aloes, and dragon s blood, of each 1 drachm flowers of Saint John s wort, 1 handful spirit of wine, i pint Canada balsam, i ounce. Digest the flowers in the spirit for 3 days, then express the liquor and dissolve the other ingredients therein. To heal cuts and Wounds, and to stop bleeding. Internally diuretic, in doses of 1 to 2 tea-spoonfuls given in gonorrhoea. [Pg.312]

Modes of Application.—Internally —Diluted with from twenty to thirty parts of water, or with cold gruel or other mucilaginous drink. As a stimulant, sometimes administered to horses and cattle in the form of Mistura Ammoniss in indigestion and colic, one fluid ounce of Liquor Ammo-ni mixed with three to five drachms of aloes, rubbed down in water, may be given to the same animals. Externally —In the form of Linimentum Ammonim, Linimentum Ammonia compositum, Linimentum Camphorse compositum. [Pg.134]
