Lipid clinic

Two individuals with serum triglyceride concentrations over 11.3 mmol/1 (1000 mg/dl) were referred to a pharma-cist-managed lipid clinic by their primary-care provider because of either treatment failure or intolerance of conventional therapies (14). Fish oils were used in one case in lieu of and in the other in addition to conventional treatments. Although fish oil has not been reported to cause hepatotoxicity, both of these patients had increased transaminases while taking fish oil. Whether fish oil truly causes hepatic injury remains to be elucidated. 

Much of the work of lipid clinics is taken up with attending to multiple interacting risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disease and smoking, as well as to the lipid abnormality.

The families were seen at two-week intervals to collect three-day diet histories and two-week daily dietary records for the food products. The study families had been followed in the lipid clinic and given extensive dietary instruction over a period of six months to seven years before the study was initiated.
