Lion mane

TLC spots with marker reveal the presence of free fatty acids (FFA), diglyceride (DG), monoglyceride (MG) but negligible amount of TG. GCMS of fatty acid— methyl esters (FAME) from lion mane presented evidence for fatty acids ranging from C9-C24 (Figs. 5.3- 5.6). Low volatility molecules like nonanedioic acid (Fig. 5.3), tridecanoic acid (Fig. 5.4), 12-methyl tridecanoic acid were also present in lion hair lipids. In addition fatty acids such as myristic, pentadecanoic, palmitic, heptanoic, stearic and octadecenoic acids (Fig. 5.5) have also been detected. Erucic... [Pg.63]

The function of lion mane is not clear. West and Packer (2002) are of the opinion that the classic concept of mane as a defensive barrier is not quite tenable. On the other hand the ethological aspect of head rubbing in the lion is just as important as that of spraying MF, indeed, the two follow in close succession. This ethological coupling ensures that both are equally frequent and so head rubbing should have... [Pg.64]

Acknowledgments We thank Messers Ross, Lamson, Warren and West of Transvaal, South Africa without whose help collection of lion mane would not have been possible. We acknowledge the kind help of the Principal, Surendranath College for access to different facilities. [Pg.66]

Black mane lions were observed to head rub and spray MF in a lion breeding centre, Transvaal (Northern Province), South Africa. A black maned lion, a lioness at the onset of oestrous (only when she sprays MF) and subadult cubs were all observed... [Pg.61]

The lion s mane jellyhsh, Cyanea capillata, has been impUcated in causing thousands of mortalities at hsh farms in Scotland on more than one occasion (Bruno and EUis, 1985 Purcell et aL, 2007), as well as sporadic problems in Norway (Bamstedt et 1998). [Pg.424]
