It has been shown that changing the length of the flexible spacer, m, by one unit can change the optical properties of a deformed nematic LCE qualitatively [15]. While for 

IR-dichroism measurements of the CN-stretching mode revealed that the order parameter S extracted from the absorption coefficients along and perpendicular to the long axis of the molecules has a similar temperature dependence as in low molecular weight materials [16].
