The y-emitting radioactive impurities have a dual effect first, they adversely affect the line spread function in SPECT-imaging and second, they cause enhanced radiation dose to the patient. If the amount of a longer-lived impurity is too high, it may jeopardize the whole advantage of the short-lived radioisotope used. The need for this x-reversal step is often ignored when describing correlation. People often say that the line spread function is the convolution of g(x) and hix) . If gix) is even (symmetric), then the x-reversal is not needed, and our simple statement is true.
