This is probably a viral infection and a soothing linctus would help, but because of the absence of cough during the day and the brother with wheezing problems a visit to the GP to eliminate the possibility of asthma would be advised. There is no specific therapy for mustard injuries of the respiratory tract. Severe coughing may be eased with codeine linctus. Antibiotic cover is recommended, the antibiotic chosen not being one liable to induce further bone marrow depression. Acetylcysteine was used in some patients from the Iran-Iraq War as a mucolytic. A single report describes a woman taking an MAOI who developed a severe occipital headache after taking 30 mL of a paediatric cough linctus. Initially this interaction was attributed to promethazine, but it is now known that the linctus in question contained phenylpropanolamine, which is much more likely to have been the cause.
