Liming drainage area

To reduce the transport of Hg and Cs from the catchment area into the lake, the measures wetland liming and drainage area liming were tested. [Pg.114]

Drainage area liming. Four complete but small catchments were treated with dolomite. [Pg.115]

Drainage area liming with dolomite was carried out in four catchments. This is an expensive remedy. It is done to obtain a long-term influence on the entire ecosystem (on the forest, soil chemistry, life in streams and lakes, and possibly also on the Hg-concentrations in fish). It was clear from the start of the project that it would not be possible within a period of 2-3 years to witness clear positive effects of this remedy with regards to Hg-concentrations in fish. After 2 years, one can note that the drainage-area limings have led to an increase in lake pH by about 8% on average. This remedy needs to be followed-up for several years. [Pg.121]

Drainage from active mining areas is considerably less than from inactive mines because of the disposal methods currently employed. Prior to discharge, Hquid effluents are limed and settled to precipitate metals as hydroxides. Elocculants are used to reduce the total suspended soHds and, in some instances, filtration of thickener overflow is practiced. [Pg.410]

The Lime Creek drainage is an alpine karst system developed in Mississippian Leadville Limestone on the west slope of the Sawatch Range, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Aspen, Colorado (Fig. 1). The mapped area is approximately 23 km (9 mi ), at elevations between 2,740 and 3,350 m (9,000 to 11,000 ft). The area is bounded by tributary valleys of the Fryingpan River on the north, south, and and west. The eastern extent of the study area is defined by uplifted and exposed Precambrian granite, gneiss, and schist (Fig. 2). [Pg.108]

Neutralization of acidic water is an important step in reclaiming land that was once mined. Mine run-off renders water around the mine site acidic, and the acid must be neutralized with lime, or calcium oxide (CaO) acting as a base, before the area can be reclaimed. However, this procedure is expensive. Recent studies have shown that constructed wetlands— human-made shallow ponds containing water plants such as cattails—can be an effective and less costly method of neutralizing acid mine drainage. [Pg.535]

The reverse of irrigation is the drainage of wet soils which can, however, lead to the opposite extreme situation, i.e. over-dry soils. Other soil improvement techniques can involve liming of acid soils, deep loosening of heavy soils, etc. All these interventions, when performed properly, i.e. to an appropriate extent and on suitable soil at suitable time increase the soil fertility. When, however, performed in an unplanned manner and by nonqualified personnel and in unsuitable areas, they can result in a devastation of the soil. [Pg.672]

Lime is removed from the soil in mai ways. About 125-2000kg/ha of calcium carbonate may be lost annually in drainage water. The rate of loss is greatest in areas of high rainfall, well-drained soils and soils rich in lime. [Pg.60]
