Limestone neutralization

As the site is snowbound for about half of each year, the treatment plant was set up to operate unattended for several months. However, snow loading ruptured the pipe delivering westewater from the mine to the treatment plant, precluding the winter-long test the snow also crushed two sheds et the site. But a flume packed with crushed limestone neutralized mine drainege continuously through the winter, operating under snowpack. [Pg.402]

Thoroughbred A family of flue-gas desulfurization processes. Commercialized versions have been called Thoroughbred-101, Thoroughbred-102, and Thoroughbred-121. Another name used for the last is CT-121. They are integrated flue-gas desulfurization processes that achieve limestone neutralization, oxidation, and conversion to gypsum, in a complex jet bubbling reactor. Developed... [Pg.366]

The ability of forests to withstand acid rain depends on the capacity of the soil to neutralize the inputting acidity. This is largely determined by local geology, in much the same way that it affects the acidification of lakes. Acidification is mainly a problem in areas where the underlying rocks provide poor buffering capacity. Rocks such as granite offer little buffering protection. Chalk and limestone neutralize added acid, and so soils, lakes and streams in limestone areas are fairly insensitive to acidic precipitation. [Pg.483]

How does limestone neutralize acid (b) Acidic water can be treated with basic substances to increase the pH, although such a procedure is usually only a temporary cure. Calculate the minimum mass of lime, CaO, needed to adjust the pH of a small lake (V = 4 X 10 L) from 5.0 to 6.5. Why might more lime be needed ... [Pg.802]
