Limb waves

In the ripple method a series of ripples is caused to travel over the surface of the liquid, the ripples being formed by means of an an electrically driven tuning fork dipping into the liquid. If viewed by means of intermittent illumination conveniently arranged by periodic interception of the light by interposition of a screen attached to one limb of the fork, apparently stationary waves may be observed and the mean wave length readily determined.

As surely as intermediates between species are nonexistent, the intermediates between the primary ovum and the first stable fossilized creature are there for us to discover. The electrocardiogram can be obtaining using standard limb leads and/or precordial leads. A lead should be selected that is stable over time and that has a sharp demarcation at the end of the T wave to facilitate the measurement of the QT interval duration. One can also position a monophasic action potential electrode catheter through the femoral or carotid artery to obtain endocardial monophasic action potentials (see below Modification of the Method). 

The electroencephalographic effects of phencyclidine intoxication have been reported in a patient who was comatose, with nystagmus and waxy rigidity of the limbs (11). The electroencephalogram showed widespread sinusoidal theta rhythm, interrupted every few seconds by periodic slow-wave complexes, similar to that seen in deep ketamine anesthesia. 

In the immediate aftermath of a tsunami, the first health interventions are to rescue survivors and provide medical care for any injuries. For people caught in the waves, the force of the water pushes people into debris, resulting in the broadest range of injuries, such as broken limbs and head injuries. Most deaths from tsunamis are related to drowning. 

Most readers who have seen the surface of the ocean during a moderate wind have noticed that breaking waves introduce lots of small air bubbles into the water (Fig. 10.9). The hydrostatic pressure only 1 m below the ocean surface is already equal to about 10% of the entire atmospheric pressure, so the pressure inside a bubble is c.110% of that at the ocean surface. Thus, there is a strong tendency for bubbles entrained in the downwelling limb of a breaking wave to lose some or all of their gas to the surrounding fluid by diffusion across the bubble surface. This causes the surface waters to be supersaturated with respect to saturation equilibrium. We define the degree of supersaturation, A %), as...

The photochemical action spectra of the various hydroxylase systems listed in Table I show only minor differences. In some of them (e.g., the 21-hydroxylase of adrenocortical microsomes), the chief decline of the short wave limb of the spectrum occurs below 433 m/x, resulting in a broader peak. The maximum of the action spectra, however, is always around 450 n fi. As shown in Table III, L values computed for the 450 m/x band ranged from 4.9 to 27 X 10 in the different hydroxylase systems, although the order of magnitude is the same. Warburg s L values... 

RNS (at 3 Hz with square-wave pulses 0.3 ms in duration) of the facial nerve to the orbicularis oculi and orbicularis nasalis, accessory nerve to the trapezius, and median nerve to the abductor pollicis brevis muscles can be studied. Hand-held bipolar electrodes and adhesive surface electrodes are used for stimulation and recording, respectively. Routine nerve conduction studies (NCS) of all four limbs, including the VII nerve, can also be performed. 

The limb leads presuppose that the patient is lying down so that EMG signals from the limb and body muscles do not intervene. Slow baseline respiration waves are seen if the characteristic frequency of the low-pass filter is 0.05 Hz or lower.
