ILs have been used for MEKC as modifiers for the quantification of the active components of lignans found in the medicinal herbs Schisandra species [52]. Preliminary inveshgations employing SDS alone as a surfactant did not lead to the necessary resolution of the studied compounds but the addition of [C4CiIm][Bp4] to the SDS micellar system resulted in the complete separation of all fhe compounds. The method was successfully applied to determine lignans in extracts of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. and Schisandra henryi C.B. Clarke in <13 min (5 mM borate-5 mM phosphate buffer in the presence of 20 mM SDS and 10 mM [C4CiIm][BFJ).

Other compounds such as resveratrol from grape skin (90), lycopene from tomato skin (91), lignans from Schisandra chinensis (92), and perillyl alcohol from Korean orange peels (93,94) have been isolated using SFE, obtaining efficiencies 30 times higher than those provided by the conventional solvent extraction methods. 

He et al. [401] extracted six lignans (schisandrin, schisanhenol, deoxy- and (y-schisandrin, schisantherin A and B) fi om Schisandra chinensis and analyzed them on a C,g column (A = 225 nm) using a 15-min 60/40-> 100/0 methanol/water gradient. Baseline resolution was achieved, except for schisantherin A and B. Nine additional peaks were tentatively identified by positive ion electrospray MS. Reference standards were run at 150 pg/mL and were readily detected.

Anti-HIV activity has been reported for many triterpenes (e.g., micrandilactones and lancifodilactones) and a few lignans (e.g., rubrisandrins A and B) from different Schisandra species. 

As the lignans have been found to be the active components in Schisanda chinensis, they are used as marker compounds in Schisandra herbs and herbal preparations. Right now HPLC is the most useful approach to analyze lignans in Schisandra and can offer good separation, shorter analysis times and easier...

Recently we developed and validated a nice reverse phase PHLC method to analyze the lignans in Schisandra fruits. Analytical HPLC analyses were performed on a Hewlett-Pachard 1100 modular system equipped with an autosampler, a quaternary pump system, a photodiode array detector and a HP Chemstation data system. A pre-packed 250 x 4.6 mm (5 pM particle size) Luna Cl8 (2) column (Phenomenex, Torrance, CA) were selected for HPLC analysis. The absorption spectra were recorded from 200 to 400 nm for all peaks quantification was carried out at a single wavelength of255 nm.
