Lighting fire escapes

A whole science, called metallography, is devoted to this. The oldest method is to cut the alloy in half, polish the cut faces, etch them in acid to colour the phases differently, and look at them in the light microscope. But you don t even need a microscope to see some grains. Look at any galvanised steel fire-escape or cast brass door knob and you will see the grains, etched by acid rain or the salts from people s hands. [Pg.27]

It is essential to discuss the requirements for stmc-tural protection, compartmentalization, emergency lighting, detection, alarms, call points, suppression, means of escape and signage with the applicable local authority, fire brigade or insurance company personnel before finalizing designs. [Pg.52]

Obturation. A process that seals the breech of a gun and prevents the escape of propint gases at the time of firing. In all modem firearms, light and medium artillen7, it is effected by the momentary expansion of the brass or copper cartridge case... [Pg.406]

Smoke obscuration (reduction in light transmitted) is a serious concern in a fire, because a decrease in visibility reduces the light available, thus hindering both escape from the fire and rescue by safety personnel. The main way in which a fire causes visibility decreases is through smoke emission. This decrease in visibility is the result of a combination of two factors how much material is burnt in the real fire (which will be less if the material has better fire performance) and how much smoke is released per unit material burnt. [Pg.648]
