The Spectronic 20 reads out in transmittance or in absorbance on a light-emitting diode display (LED). The instrument is equipped with an occluder, which is a vane that automatically falls between the beam and the detector whenever the cylindrical cell is removed from its holder. The light-control device is a V-shaped aperture that is moved in and out of the beam to control the amount of light reaching the exit slit.

As you face the instrument, a key pad with an LED (light emitting diode) display is on the right side and the cell compartment is on the left.

Some pocket calculators on the market today still employ LED (light emitting diode) display. This is the same basic circuitry or chip used in the new LED watches. A considerable amount of energy is required to power these displays when they are in use. and a relatively high drain rate results. The drain rate of the LED calculator runs from 30 to 80 mA.
