Light controlled

Electrical. The plant electrical system is sometimes more important than the steam system. The electrical system consists of the utihty company s entry substation, any ia-plant generating equipment, primary distribution feeders, secondary substations and transformers, final distribution cables, and various items of switch-gear, protective relays, motor starters, motors, lighting control panels, and capacitors to adjust power factor. [Pg.227]

Key technologies that are used in modern lighting include electronic ballasts, more efficient tubular fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps, and lighting controls. Fluorescent lighting is the predominant lighting system installed in post-1980 buildings and is used in 71 percent of floor space. Specialty retail stores use a combination of fluorescent and... [Pg.195]

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) is a major industrial product from the polybrominated diphenyl ethers used as flame retardants derivatives of this product have been detected in the environment. After exposure to the land surface, these contaminants adsorb on soil materials and may reach the atmosphere as particulate matter these particulates are subsequently subject to photolytic reactions. In this context, Ahn et al. (2006) studied photolysis of BDE-209 adsorbed on clay minerals, metal oxides, and sediments, under sunhght and UV dark irradiation. Dark and light control treatments during UV and sunlight irradiation showed no disappearance of BDE-209 during the experiments. Data on half-lives and rate constants of BDE-209 adsorbed on subsurface minerals and sediments, as determined by Ahn et al. (2006) and extracted from the literature, are shown in Table 16.6. [Pg.341]

The main application areas for electrochromic systems are in electrically switchable rear-view car mirrors for anti-dazzle, in glazing units for temperature and light control and in visnal displays. The main advantage offered by electrochromic systems in the first two of these applications is the fact that the cells can be made very large, i.e. one cell can comprise a whole glazing unit. [Pg.61]

Before considering the photochemistry of vision in higher animals, it will be interesting to look briefly at the process known as phototaxis which is sometimes considered to be a very early form of vision . It has been observed that some photosynthetic bacteria are able to swim selectively towards illuminated areas, and to avoid dark places this light-controlled motion has been named phototaxis (Figure 5.9). This type of behaviour is... [Pg.171]
