Lifes Zoology

Our much more modest and immediate goal in the present section is to provide a brief glimpse of Life s well documented zoology, before setting-the-stage for our later discussion and proof (outlined in section 3.4.5) of its universality. 

Since its conception in 1970, the temporal fates of literally thousands of various initial configurations have been analyzed and cataloged. As always, the obvious way to start is by asking what happens to simple seeds. 

Of the 12 possible initial states with 5 live cells, 5 yield the null state within t = A steps, 2 yield a stable state and four lead to the same period two oscillator marking the end of the evolution of state E in figure 3.67 In marked contrast to this rather benign behavior, however, the remaining 5-cell pattern - called the R-pentamino -evolves in a considerably more dramatic fashion. 

From figure 3.70, we see that the R-pentamino is in fact wildly unstable, expanding outward and continually undergoing change while scattering various bits

This book is about life, mostly about the molecules of life. Molecules are the focus of the science of chemistry, just as animals are the focus for zoology, plants are the focus for botany, and outer space is the focus for astronomy. A bit more broadly, chemistry is the science of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter, especially of atomic and molecular systems. Let s talk a bit about chemistry, the molecular science.

Field trips can be used for review and drill. Ideas learnt in classroom can be better fixed in mind in actual situations, e.g., by visiting factories the ideas of running a plant and the products manufactured can be better fixed in students minds, or visiting a zoological park or a botanical garden, more abstract ideas about animal and plant life can be more clarified to students.

Biota. Biota are another means of dispersal of contaminants in the environment. When the material is biomagnified, such as the case with mirex, DDT, and PCB s and to a lesser extent with more polar compounds, botanical and zoological life can be affected and, as well, serve as a mode of dispersal. Chemical residues from the production plant have been found in fish in Spring Creek resulting in a warning by PA DER to avoid eating the fish.
