Level motion-demagnifier

The piezoelectric stepper described in the previous section, the louse, is a somewhat complicated device, which requires substantial effort to make it work. In many surface-science experiments, the actual location on the sample surface does not matter. A one-dimensional stepper is sufficient. In its simplest form, a micrometer, or a fine-pitch lead screw, can make controlled steps of a few micrometers. However, it is extremely difficult for STM, where the range of the z-piezo is typically of the order of O.ljL/m. [Pg.271]

1 Macor is the trade name of a rnachineable glass manufactured by Corning Glass, NY 10000. U is a good insulator and compatible with ultra-high vacuum. [Pg.271]

Even with the foot, the vibration problem in such STM designs has not been resolved sufficiently. In fact, the tripod scanner has a relatively low natural vibration frequency, and the approaching mechanism is relatively bulky. In actual application, a four to-six element metal-plate stack with viton separators is used for vibration isolation. In order to achieve atomic resolution, a spring stage, either suspension spring or compression spring, is neces- [Pg.272]
