The widening of the shock wave front in this case can also be foreseen from the viewpoint of Leontovich and Mandelstam [7] who indicate that delayed excitation corresponds to an anomalously large second gas viscosity coefficient. However, this approach is approximate being qualitatively valid for small-amplitude waves (of the type in Fig. 3), the concept of the viscosity coefficient is inappropriate to describe the more complicated structure of large-amplitude waves (of the type in Fig. 5). [Pg.159]

Although I ve done my best work in chemical oscillations. I m not a chemist by education. I graduated in 1961 from the Department of Biophysics at the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University. My interest in oscillations came from my father, who was a physicist and started his work with the famous theoretical physicist Leontovich and then worked with Prokhorov, a Nobel Prize winner. My father is now 78 and lives in the suburbs of Moscow but still goes regularly to his Institute. I am 57. [Pg.433]

In recent years, experimental investigation of the depolarized Rayleigh scattering of several liquids composed of optically anisotropic molecules has confirmed the existence of a doublet-symmetric about zero frequency change and with a splitting of approximately 0.5 GHz (see Fig. 12.1.1). The existence of this doublet had been predicted on the basis of a hydrodynamic theory several years previously by Leontovich (1941). This theory assumes that local strains set up by a transverse shear wave are relieved by collective reorientation of individual molecules. Later, Rytov (1957) formulated a more general hydrodynamic theory for viscoelastic fluids that reduces to the Leontovich theory in the appropriate limit. The theories of Rytov and Leontovitch are different from the present two-variable theory, in that the primary variable is the stress tensor and not the polarizability. [Pg.317]

Perhaps it is not well known that Leontovich (1935) was the first to investigate a stochastic model of chemical reaction. From the beginning and from the end of the nineteen-forties the works of Delbriick (1940) and Siegert (1949) might be mentioned. While the former studied fluctuations in the... [Pg.101]
