A hydroxy and an arylthio group can be added to a double bond by treatment with an aryl disulfide and lead tetraacetate in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid." Manganese and copper acetates have been used instead of Pb(OAc)4. ° Addition of the groups OH and RSO has been achieved by treatment of alkenes with O2 and a thiol (RSH)." Two RS groups were added, to give vie- dithiols, by treatment of the alkene with a disulfide RSSR and Bp3-etherate."° This reaction has been carried... [Pg.1055]

Olefins react with manganese(III) acetate to give 7-lactones.824 The mechanism is probably free-radical, involving addition of CH2COOH to the double bond. Lactone formation has also been accomplished by treatment of olefins with lead tetraacetate,825 with a-bromo carboxylic acids in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as catalyst,826 and with dialkyl malonates and iron(III) perchlorate Fe(C104)3-9H20.827 Olefins can also be converted to 7-lactones by indirect routes.828 OS VII, 400. [Pg.836]

Pyrazolines can also be prepared by the oxidation of pyrazolidines. 2-Pyrazolines, which are readily obtained in the reaction of a,j -unsaturated ketones with hydrazine, also undergo nitrogen extrusion at elevated temperature usually in the presence of a basic catalyst. The reaction is believed to proceed via 1-pyrazolines. Treatment of 3,3,5-trialkyl-2-pyrazolines with lead tetraacetate followed by thermolysis affords cyclopropyl acetates ". Oxidation of certain 2-pyrazolines with manganese dioxide gives 3H-pyrazoles, which in turn produce cyclopropenes in the photolysis (equation 7). ... [Pg.311]

In broad terms it is only in special cases that the oxidation of hydrocarbons to primary or secondary alcohols is of practical importance. One such case is oxidation of toluene and its derivatives to the corresponding benzyl alcohols, by e.g., manganese dioxide, lead dioxide, lead tetraacetate, or Caro s acid. It is advantageous to use lead tetraacetate in glacial acetic acid solution since then the alcohol formed is protected by esterification against further oxidation. [Pg.302]
