Lead tetraacetate ketones

Lead tetraacetate Ketones from glycols Degradation... [Pg.77]

R = cyl), eg, with -nitrobenzoyl chloride. Upon reaction with lead tetraacetate, di(hydroperoxyalkyl) peroxides can also be converted to cycHc diperoxides (4). They are also converted to symmetrical or unsymmetrical cycHc triperoxides (5) in the presence of a second ketone and a catalyst, eg, CuSO -HCl (44,119). [Pg.116]

Although lead tetraacetate can attack many polar and nonpolar functions in the steroid molecule, its greatest reactivity is towards vicinal diols. These diols are generally cleaved so rapidly under stoichiometric conditions that other alcohol functions in the molecule need not be protected. Thus lead tetraacetate in acetic acid at room temperature splits the 17a,20-diol group in (9) to yield the 17-ketone (10), the allylic A -3jS-alcohol remaining intact during this oxidation. Since lead tetraacetate is solublein many anhydrous... [Pg.242]

If homolytic reaction conditions (heat and nonpolar solvents) can be avoided and if the reaction is conducted in the presence of a weak base, lead tetraacetate is an efficient oxidant for the conversion of primary and secondary alcohols to aldehydes and ketones. The yield of product is in many cases better than that obtained by oxidation with chromium trioxide. The reaction in pyridine is moderately slow the intial red pyridine complex turns to a yellow solution as the reaction progresses, the color change thus serving as an indicator. The method is surprisingly mild and free of side reactions. Thus 17a-ethinyl-17jS-hydroxy steroids are not attacked and 5a-hydroxy-3-ket-ones are not dehydrated. [Pg.242]

The 17,20-glycol grouping (with or without an additional C-21 alcohol) can be cleaved to the 17-ketone by any of the four reagents. However, the presence of a 20-ketone has a marked influence on reactivity. Thus, 17a-hydroxy-20-ketones lacking additional oxygenation at C-21 are readily cleaved only by chromium trioxide. A recent report, however, claims that 17a-hydroxypregnenolone 3-acetate can be quantitatively cleaved to dehydroepiandrosterone acetate using lead tetraacetate in an aprotic solvent... [Pg.148]

However, treatment of the 20-cyanohydrins with lead tetraacetate in the absence of iodine regenerates the 20-ketones and HCN. [Pg.251]

The lla-hydroxy-11,19-cyclo steroids are very efficiently converted into 19-acetoxy-11-ketones by treatment with lead tetraacetate in benzene. ... [Pg.262]

Lead tetraacetate fragmentation has not been applied to the 20-hydroxy-18, 20-cyclo steroids. However, preferential cleavage of the 17,20-bond would be expected, as was observed in the chromic acid oxidation of a saturated 20-hydroxy-18,20-cyclo steroid in hot acetic acid which affords the 18-acetyl-17-ketone in 50-60% yield. [Pg.262]

The formation of a-acetoxyketones by oxidation of enamines with thallic acetate has been studied in detail (27) and found to be of preparative value (80 % yields) particularly in five- and six-membered-ring ketone derivatives. Enamines of linear or seven-membered-ring ketones were oxidized also, but at very much slower rates. Enamines of aldehydes with a-hydrogen substituents underwent self-eondensations during the oxidation reactions. Lead tetraacetate was less satisfactory as an oxidizing agent. [Pg.412]

Since 1,5-enediones are usually obtained via pyrylium salts, syntheses of the type found in Section B, 2, a have a rather theroetical interest, save for a few special syntheses. There exist several direct syntheses of l,5-enediones, e.g., from j8-chlorovinyl ketones and j8-diketones or j8-keto esters special pathways to 1,5-enediones have also been described, namely, oxidation with lead tetraacetate or with periodic acid of cyclopentene-l,2-diols. ... [Pg.270]

Conjugate addition of methyl magnesium iodide in the presence of cuprous chloride to the enone (91) leads to the la-methyl product mesterolone (92) Although this is the thermodynamically unfavored axially disposed product, no possibility for isomerization exists in this case, since the ketone is once removed from this center. In an interesting synthesis of an oxa steroid, the enone (91) is first oxidized with lead tetraacetate the carbon at the 2 position is lost, affording the acid aldehyde. Reduction of this intermediate, also shown in the lactol form, with sodium borohydride affords the steroid lactone oxandrolone... [Pg.174]

The 1,1-dimetallic compounds, R2C(SnMe3)ZnBr, were oxidized by dry air at —10 to 0°C in the presence of Me3SiCl to give aldehydes or ketones, R2C=0. In a related indirect method, arylthallium bis(trifluoroacetates) (prepared by 12-21) can be converted to phenols by treatment with lead tetraacetate followed by triphenylphosphine, and then dilute NaOH. Diarylthallium trifluoroacetates undergo the same reaction. ... [Pg.796]

Compounds containing geminal carboxyl groups (disubstituted malonic acid derivatives) can also be bisdecarboxylated with lead tetraacetate, gcm-diacetates (acylals) being produced, which are easily hydrolyzable to ketones ... [Pg.1530]

Lead tetraacetate attacks several ketones, the rates being those of enolisation , viz. [Pg.347]

Lead tetraacetate can effect oxidation of carbonyl groups, leading to formation of a-acetoxy ketones,215 but the yields are seldom high. Boron trifluoride can be used to catalyze these oxidations. It is presumed to function by catalyzing the formation of the enol, which is thought to be the reactive species.216 With unsymmetrical ketones, products from oxidation at both a-methylene groups are found.217... [Pg.1133]

Introduction of oxygen a to a ketone function can also be carried out via the silyl enol ether. Lead tetraacetate gives the a-acetoxy ketone.219... [Pg.1133]

Oxidative cyclization of acylhydrazones 110a, derived from aldehydes or ketones, with the use of lead tetraacetate (LTA) has been developed into a useful route to several disubstituted and tetrasubstituted oxadiazole derivatives 122, being a convenient source of relatively stable carbenes, like N(0)C , S(0)C , 0(0)C , or S(S)C <2000J(P1)2161 >. Some representative recent examples of the syntheses are collected in Table 2. [Pg.433]

A Hungarian research group observed a nonexpected formation of a tetrazolo[l,5- ]derivative <2001J(P 1) 1131 >. These authors found that treatment of the /3-lactam-substituted tetrazolylmethyl ketone 135 with lead tetraacetate results in a ring closure to pyridine ring fused to tetrazole, and product 136 was formed as a mixture of diastereomers in low yield (Scheme 33). [Pg.663]

It has been shown that the lead tetraacetate-mediated 1,2-aryl shift of various meta-substituted / -cyclohexyl aryl ketones, e.g. (10), results in excellent yields of the corresponding rearranged esters (11). A unique reaction, providing 3-hydroxy-2-arylacrylic acid ethyl esters (14), has been observed between aryl aldehydes and ethyl diazoacetate in the presence of the iron Lewis acid [rj — (C5H5)Fe(CO)2(THF)BF4], It appears that the enol esters are formed by an unusual 1,2-aryl shift from a possible intermediate (13), which in turn is formed from the reaction of the iron aldehyde complex (12) with ethyl diazoacetate (see Scheme 4). [Pg.490]
