Lead azide PbN

Determine the molar mass of each of the following compounds, all of which have been used as explosives (a) lead azide, PbN, (b) nitroglycerin, C3H5N5O9, (c) mercury fulminate, Hg(ONC)2... 

Dry mixtures of Special Purpose lead azide and RDX had impact sensitivities intermediate between those of the ingredients. At azide concentrations above about 10 wt %, the impact sensitivity was essentially that of pure lead azide. If the same mixtures were flooded with a volatile halocarbon (Freon TF), compositions of <25% PbNe were desensitized but compositions of >25% PbN,. were more sensitive than dry mixtures (Figure 18).

Various basic azides such as PbN .PbO and (PbN6)3(PbO)s have been characterized by X-rays from suspensions of lead azides and oxides22s. 

Lead (IV) Aside. Treatment of Pb 04 with aq HNa soln yielded a yeLred soln with a considerable Pb(IV) azide content. Normal HNj soln and Pbj04 gave compds of PbN to PbNt0, while coned HNj solns yielded a compd slightly lower than PbNia.
