Laying on of hands

When I was in the depths of despair I went for prayer and the laying on of hands with friends. I did that quite frequently. That was what helped me to keep going. People do get healed in the most... [Pg.218]

Cagliostro posed as a physician, and claimed the power of curing diseases simply by the laying on of hands. He went so far as to assert he had restored to life the dead child of a nobleman in Paris the discovery that the miracle was effected by substituting a living child for the dead one caused him to flee, laden with spoil, to Warsaw, and then to Strassburg. [Pg.58]

But Mercury you must have, for "the man who works without it is as one who draws a bow without a string," and yet Mercury, or the Salt of the Sages, is evidently not anything that one can purchase or create, save as it is created, without laying on of hands, by the natural cohobation of Sol and Luna themselves. [Pg.87]

Magic was often used as part of the treatment and gave the patient the expectation of a cure and thus, provided a placebo effect (Pinch, 1994). The term placing the hand appears frequently in a large number of medical papyri this probably alludes to the manual examination in order to reach a diagnosis but could also imply cure by the laying on of hands, or even both (Nunn, 1997). This could be the basis of modern massage (with or without aromatherapy). It is certainly the basis of many alternative medicine practices at present (Lis-Balchin, 1997). [Pg.625]

In many religions and among many shaman, healers, and medicine men and women, ritualistic "laying on of the hands" was common. It was believed that a healing force or some form of energy passed from the healer to the patient that would effect a cure. [Pg.75]

Abstract On average 50% of patients are compliant to long term medication treatment. Non-compliance is a drug-related problem as it may result in negative outcomes for the patient. Non-compliance can be intentional or non-intentional and related to knowledge, attitudes, and also practical problems including memory and administration difficulties. The decision to take a medication or not (compliance) lay in the hand of the patient, but the health care providers can support the patient in this decision with the aim to improve the patients health. Definitions and tools to detect negative patient and health-care behaviour and methods for concordance are presented in this chapter. [Pg.111]

Well, we had to break the news to her gently, an it s the happy woman she was for the next few days in spite of all the pain she suffered. She d just lie there holdin Gerald s hand an gazin at him an makin him tell over an over again of how he d been saved from the wreck. He was only a wee lad of three at the time, but he could still remember of his father standin there on the deck of the sinkin ship an holdin him in his arms. He could still hear the words his father spoke to him an feel the father s hand slippin the rosary over his head an claspin the little fingers around the cross as it lay on his breast. Michael had passed him to a sailor an he was lowered into one of the boats, where a kind-hearted woman took compassion on his loneliness an cared for him. They d been picked up by a sailin vessel bound for France, an the woman who first cared for him, took him with her from France to America an finally adopted him. She brought him up, educated him, an at last he became a priest of God. [Pg.28]

In Fig. 3 the lay-out of the piggeiy is mentioned. The stall is renewed and instead of the normal depth of 1.50 m by underslat slurry storage the channels have a depth of 0.50 m. These shallow channels are as a matter of course cheaper but on the other hand facilities for storage of dung and liquid must be build outside the building. In front of the stall a... [Pg.239]

Knowledge based approaches such as fuzzy logic, neural networks or multiagents model currently constitute an important axis of research and application in bioprocesses. They have shown their usefulness particularly when one does not have an analytical model but that a certain expertise is available. Harmand and Steyer [37] have addressed that when this expertise comprises a sufficiently important know-how, approaches such as fuzzy logic will be preferred. If, on the other hand, one has only a limited experience but lays out of a rather important data base, the statistical approaches such as neural networks can be used. [Pg.159]

One way to apply such moderate pressure is to enclose the wet-liquid resin material and mold in a flexible membrane or bag, and draw a vacuum inside the enclosure. Atmospheric pressure on the outside then presses the bag or membrane uniformly against the wet lay-up. An effective pressure of 69-283 kPa (10 to 14 psi) is applied to the product. Air is mechanically worked out of the lay-up by hand usually using serrated rollers. The vacuum direcdy helps to remove air in the wet lay-up via techniques such as using bleeder channels within the bag (using material such as jute, glass wool, etc.) to aid in the removal of air and also to permit drainage of any excess resin. This layup is than exposed to heat using an oven or heat lamp. [Pg.480]

The main effect of these hormones is to increase the laying down of glycogen in the iiver. At the same time, when injected into an experimental animal they put it into negative nitrogen balance -that is, they increase the breakdown of proteins and amino acids. In general, they seem to operate at least partly so as to reverse or counterbalance the effects of insulin, so that, in a normal healthy animal or human, carbohydrate metabolism is controlled partly as the result of a tug-of-war between insulin on the one hand and the glucocorticoids on the other. [Pg.240]
