Large-scale homogeneity

Ball mills are best suited for breaking up strong cell walls such as those encountered in Gram-positive bacteria, but scale-up is limited beyond the small pilot scale. French presses are the apparatus of choice for large-scale homogenization of cells.

A unique particle physics framework has been proposed, which can account for the energy density fluctuations with the characteristics found in CMBR. One conjectures that the large-scale homogeneity of the Universe is due to a very early period of exponential inflation in its scale (Peebles 1993). 

Such a large-scale homogeneity is confirmed by the existence of a single Tg in PCN/LPU semi-IPNs, estimated by DMTA, DSC [35-37], DRS and TSDC [39, 40] techniques, common data being presented in Figure 19. All presented Tg values show the same trend with composition. The theoretical compositional dependence of Tg of the PCN/LPU semi-IPNs can be obtained for DMTA data [27] according to the Fox [34] equation ... 

The austenitic stainless steels and most other metals and alloys of practical importance in large-scale homogeneous reactors are thermodynamically unstable in aqueous solutions and depend on protective films for their corrosion resistance. Tortunately, when austenitic stainless steels are oxidized in high-temperature uranyl sulfate solutions, the steel oxidizes uniformly so that no element (or elements) is leached preferentially from the alloy. However, not all the alloying elements contribute to film formation.

Maintenance considerations. A study of the problem of maintenance of a large-scale homogeneous reactor indicated the following. It appears impossible to accomplish some repair operations remotely in place and under 20 ft of water. Experience to date tends to indicate that the repair of radioactive eciuipmcnt may be so difhc ult that it will be uneconomical to repair anything except such small components as valves and pumps. The larger defective components must be removed from the. system and a replacement installed. The repairs, if possible, can then be made in a "hot machine shop after the system is back in operation.
