Lanthanide organometallics synthesis

Finally, Professors Gabriella Bombieri of the University of Milan and Gino Paolucci of the University of Venice review the prodigious literature on the organometallic Jt complexes of the f-elements. In this work they consider the main classes of complexes of both the lanthanide and actinide organometallics. Synthesis and structure are prominent in their presentation.

The synthetic potential of transition metal atoms in organometallic chemistry was first demonstrated by the formation of dibenzenechrom-ium (127). Apart from chromium, Ti, V, Nb, Mo, W, Mn, and Fe atoms each form well-defined complexes with arenes on condensation at low temperatures. Interaction has also been observed between arenes and the vapors of Co, Ni, and some lanthanides. Most important, the synthesis of metal-arene complexes from metal vapors has been successful with a wide range of substituted benzenes, providing routes to many compounds inaccessible by conventional reductive preparations of metal-arene compounds.

As can be seen from Scheme III, lanthanide halides are suitable precursors for the synthesis of homoleptic derivatives such as silylamides [114], cyclopen-tadienyls [115] and aryloxides [116]. Such organometallies can be readily obtained in a pure form by sublimating them from the reaction mixture. They themselves are important precursors in organometallic transformations (vide infra). Heteroleptic complexes of the type CpxLn(halide)y (x + y = 2,3) are important synthetic precursors with respect to formation of various Ln-X bonds via simple metathesis reactions [2-29]. Fig. 4 indicates the lanthanide element bonds which are involved in these ubiquitous heteroleptic cyclopentadienyl systems.

Organometallic compounds of lanthanide metals other than Sm, Eu, and Yb are very rare until now. But the development of this chemistry became possible after the synthesis of divalent precursors of Tm, Dy, and Nd in the late 1990s, namely of their diiodides (see Scandium, Yttrium the Lanthanides Inorganic Coordination Chemistry) and by using hgands such as phospholyl or arsolyl, which stabilize divalent lanthanide ions.
