The transition from Gd2Q3 to Gd2Q3N sketched above is an inconvincingly formal one since a topochemical reaction of this kind is not possible. The difference between the black Gd2Q3 and the colorless Gd2Q3N is too large to help decipher the details of what happens when the borderline between cluster systems and simple salts is crossed. From the early 1960s onwards, the use of lanthanide (Ln) based catalysts for the polymerization of conjugated dienes came to be the focus of fundamental studies [31]. The first patent on the use of lanthanides for diene polymerization originates from 1964 and was submitted by Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) [32,33]. In this patent the use of binary lanthanum and cerium catalysts is claimed. All of the actinide elements are metals with physical and chemical properties changing along the series from those typical of transition elements to those of the lanthanides. Several separation, purification, and preparation techniques have been developed considering the different properties of the actinide elements, their availability, and application. Powerful reducing agents are necessary to produce the metals from the actinide compounds. Actinide metals are produced by metallothermic reduction of halides, oxides, or carbides, followed by the evaporation in vacuum or the thermal dissociation of iodides to refine the metals. [Pg.8]
