Transformation of monocytes into epithelioid cells and formation of giant cells of the Langhans type have been obtained by Sabin with various lipid fractions of Mycobacteria prepared by Anderson it is now known that the branched-chain fatty acids of the phthienoic, mycocerosio, and mycolic acid types are all active in this respect. CD68 multinucleated giant cells of the Langhans type, with nuclei on the cell periphery, and of the Touton type, with nuclei in the centre of the cell, expressed cathepsinK and the immunostaining was even more intense than that of the surrounding epithehoid ceUs (Buhling et al. 2001).
