The electrostatic term AE can be used to estimate the effect of coadsorbates on the chemisorption energy of adsorbed species. For several atoms 8(j>Q has been calculated by means of the self-consistent Lang-Williams approach.

Although the resonant level model successfully explains a few general aspects of chemisorption, it has nevertheless many shortcomings. The model gives no information on the electronic structure of the chemisorption bond it does not tell where the electrons are. Such information is obtained from a more refined model, called the density functional method. We will not explain how it works but merely give the results for the adsorption of Cl and Li on jellium, reported by Lang and Williams [20].

In collaboration with Lang, Winter, Williams, and Roder have also studied the Mossbauer spectrum of the Fe(III) hemoglobin thiol-complexes. The Mossbauer spectra of these complexes are rather different from those of all other low-spin complexes. Thus, should it prove possible to substitute 57Fe in P-450, Mossbauer spectroscopy of the protein could lead to a relatively safe identification of the Fe(III) heme/thiol link.
