The above-mentioned codes contain requirements for accelerated durabiUty tests. In addition, interlayer manufacturers and laminators expose test samples for several years under extreme weather conditions, eg, the Florida coast and Arizona desert. The laminated products weather extremely well, with no change in the plastic interlayer. Occasionally, clouding is noted around the edges when exposed to high humidity for long periods, but this is reversible. Colored areas of PVB laminates may fade while subjected to extensive uv/solar irradiation, which could cause an appearance issue. The ASA (now ANSI) performance code for Safety Glazing Materials was revised in 1966 to incorporate these improvements in windshield constmction. The addition of test no. 26 requiring support of a 2.3-kg ball dropped from 3.7 m defined this level of improvement. It was based on a correlation estabUshed between 10-kg, instmmented, head-form impacts on windshields, on 0.6 x 0.9-m flat laminates, and the standard 0.3 x 0.3-m laminate with the 2.3-kg ball (28). Crash cases involving the two windshield interlayer types were matched for car impact speeds and were compared (29). The improved design produced fewer, less extensive, and less severe facial lacerations than those produced in the pre-1966 models. [Pg.527]

Curing of Polyimlde Resin. Thermoset processing involves a large number of simultaneous and interacting phenomena, notably transient and coupled heat and mass transfer. This makes an empirical approach to process optimization difficult. For instance, it is often difficult to ascertain the time at which pressure should be applied to consolidate the laminate. If the pressure is applied too early, the low resin viscosity will lead to excessive bleed and flash. But if the pressure is applied too late, the diluent vapor pressure will be too high or the resin molecular mobility too low to prevent void formation. This example will outline the utility of our finite element code in providing an analytical model for these cure processes. [Pg.276]

We first explain the setting of reactors for all CFD simulations. We used Fluent 6.2 as a CFD code. Each reactant fluid is split into laminated fluid segments at the reactor inlet. The flow in reactors was assumed to be laminar flow. Thus, the reactants mix only by molecular diffusion, and reactions take place fi om the interface between each reactant fluid. They arc made of a laminated melaminealkyd core encapsulated in polyethylene wax. The core is colour coded by the inclusion of pigments. One of the layers contains iron particles to make the taggant magnet-sensitive and one or both exterior layers contain fluorescent compounds which respond to ultraviolet radiation. [Pg.674]
