Lambda bottom

Another unique phenomenon exhibited by Hquid helium II is the Rollin film (62). AH surfaces below the lambda point temperature that are coimected to a helium II bath are covered with a very thin (several hundredths llm) mobile film of helium II. For example, if a container is dipped into a helium II bath, fiUed, and then raised above the bath, a film of Hquid helium flows up the inner waH of the container, over the Hp, down the outer waH, and drips from the bottom of the suspended container back into the helium II bath. SinHlady, if the empty container is partiaHy submerged in the helium II bath with its Hp above the surface, the helium film flows up the outer waH of the container, over its Hp, and into the container. This process continues until the level of Hquid in the partiaHy submerged container reaches that of the helium II bath. [Pg.8]

A propeller is chiral, it just pushes water in different directions. In chemical terms, when a molecule is left-handed it s denoted as A (capital lambda), and when it s right-handed it s denoted as A (capital delta). In the following figure, you can see how a three-bladed propeller is either left-handed (on top), or right-handed (on the bottom). [Pg.149]

The lambda sensor is used to monitor internal combustion engines. It is shaped like a candle and placed in the vehicle exhaust pipe at the outlet of the oylinder head. It is a potentiometric type of sensor using a closed-bottom ceramic tube. Several million examples of this type of sensor are produced every year. [Pg.91]

The fundamental properties of waves are illustrated in Figure 6.2. Waves are characterized by their wavelength, fi uency, and amplitude. Wavelength A (lambda) is the distance between identical points on successive waves (e.g., successive peaks or successive troughs). The frequency v (nu) is the number of waves that pass through a particular point in 1 second. Anq>litude is the vertical distance from the midline of a wave to the top of the peak or the bottom of the trough. [Pg.194]
