Ladder spreaders

Additionally, some departments require candidates to climb a ladder, lift a pneumatic spreader to several different positions, and even to swim a certain distance or tread water for a certain time (this is most often found in areas with access to open waterways or where swimming pools are common).

Spreaders on step or platform ladders must be fully opened and locked to prevent the ladders from collapsing or tipping. FuUy opened and locked spreaders can prevent them from walking, twisting and closing. 

Ladders must not be tied or fastened together to create longer sections unless they are specifically designed for such use. A metal spreader or locking device must be provided on each stepladder to hold the front and back sections in an open position when the ladder is being used. Two or more separate ladders used to reach an elevated work area must be offset with a platform or landing between the ladders, except when portable ladders are used to gain access to fixed ladders.

Proper selection mainly involves understanding the hazards presented by the work environment and having the capability to overcome the hazards. Hazards presented by the base surface, the top surface, the work height, reach, and load need to be understood. For example, spur plates at the shoes of the ladder prevent softer grounds from allowing the ladder to slip. Spreaders can be attached to the rear of the ladder to provide stable top bases while working around windows or uneven surfaces.
