Lactam carbonyl selective reduction

Reductions affecting the ring atoms of a pyrazol-3-one are of two types. Selective reductions of a dichloromethyl group into a chloromethyl group and the reduction of the lactam carbonyl into either a methylene group or a secondary alcohol. Exocyclic double bonds at C4 of pyrazol-3-ones such as imino groups of oximes and various alkenyl derivatives are prone to reduction under relatively mild conditions. [Pg.249]

Samarium(II) iodide also allows the reductive coupling of sulfur-substituted aromatic lactams such as 7-166 with carbonyl compounds to afford a-hydroxyalkylated lactams 7-167 with a high anti-selectivity [74]. The substituted lactams can easily be prepared from imides 7-165. The reaction is initiated by a reductive desulfuration with samarium(ll) iodide to give a radical, which can be intercepted by the added aldehyde to give the desired products 7-167. Ketones can be used as the carbonyl moiety instead of aldehydes, with good - albeit slightly lower - yields. [Pg.523]

Examples of this kind of enantiomorphic or chiral selectivity are now being found in organic synthesis. Asymmetric synthesis, for example, has been demonstrated with stereo-controlled Michael addition in the synthesis of beta-lactams using chiral catalysts, where an acyl ligand such as acetyl is bound to cyclo-pentadiene carbonyl triphenylphosphine. Essentially complete enantiomorphic selectivity has been achieved in this Michael addition synthesis. Another case is enantio-morhic ketone reduction in ethylbenzene reduction in the ethylation of benzaldehyde. Using chiral catalysts, 97% selectivity has been achieved.
