Labelling machine coated

The bottles are inspected for fill-height and then are conveyed to the labeller (Fig. 20.29). Bottle labels are made of (/) sized machine-coated paper, ( ) wet-strength paper, Hi) foil, or (/v) metallized paper. The first is cheapest and the range of grades is 70-85 g/m. Wet-strength paper is paper treated with either melamine-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resins. Compared with the machine-coated paper it is marginally more expensive and is less likely to be pulped in modern bottle washers. Aluminium foil is 4-5-fold more expensive... 

Coated papers are often coated on one side and are suitable for offset and gravure printing. They can be painted, bronzed, and punched. They are waterproof and alkali resistant to prevent the detachment of labels in washing machines. They are... 

The W.H. Brady Co., of Milwaukee, WI, a premier sign and label manufacturer showed interest in photoprinting labels, and manufactured a device, in which characters and symbols could be exposed one character at a time. This machine, called Kalograph , was a compact label maker measuring about 10" x 10" x 9" that was designed to contact-print on a label substrate, which consisted of a transparent or colored polyester subshate with adhesive backing. The photosensitive coating was a DYLUX type composition.
