The same small corpus of Chinese surnames served for Vietnam and Korea, though the pronunciation of the characters varied even more widely than in Chinese dialects. Nothing so radically marked out the distinctiveness of Vietnam from China than the romanisation of names, along with the rest of the language, in the early twentieth century. When all those with one Chinese character (Ruan in pinyin) became Nguyen, and with another (Pan in pinyin) became Phan, they parted company with the Chinese naming world in a way that could not be rejoined. 

Research in Chinese medicinal herbs has been conducted for decades in China, Japan, and Korea and recently in the West. Unfortunately, language barriers and the unreliability of sources and herbal material have hampered progress. A basic scientific understanding of the Chinese herbal preparations is the first step toward building consumer confidence in herbal medications. Proper procedures to eliminate adulteration, contamination, and toxic side effects are also urgently needed to regulate the use of Chinese herbs. 

South Korea still insists that it not be named as CW possessor in any official OPCW document. Yet, although the country appears only in coded language as a state party in the OPCW context, it is an open secret that this reference applies to the Republic of Korea.
