Each pothole is a separate bubbling compartment like a heated laboratory flask. The catch is that these potholes are too acidic to support life. However, in 2012 a team led by Eugene Koonin published a paper arguing that the acidity comes from oxygen in the atmosphere. On early Earth, with oxygen locked up in the crust, the pH would be more balanced, and metal-rich chambers would build up from the rock, like the black smokers, but above ground. Again I m reminded of Mono Lake.
