Despite the blatantly political, and repressive, character of Russian psychiatry, many prominent American psychiatrists have gone on record with unstinting praise for Soviet-styled community psychiatry. An article by Lawrence C. Kolb, chairman of the department of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, is illustrative.
