Kinetics of catalyzed reactions

Until now we have been discussing the kinetics of catalyzed reactions. Losses due to volatility and side reactions also raise questions as to the validity of assuming a constant concentration of catalyst. Of course, one way of avoiding this issue is to omit an outside catalyst reactions involving carboxylic acids can be catalyzed by these compounds themselves. Experiments conducted under these conditions are informative in their own right and not merely as means of eliminating errors in the catalyzed case. As noted in connection with the discussion of reaction (5.G), the intermediate is stabilized by coordination with a proton from the catalyst. In the case of autoprotolysis by the carboxylic acid reactant, the rate-determining step is probably the slow reaction of intermediate [1] ... [Pg.288]

The most important methods for the determination of kinetics of catalyzed reactions are described here. We emphasize the problems and pitfalls in obtaining reliable reaction rates. The many diagnostic tests are briefly discussed and some warnings are given to limitations of commonly used laboratory reactors. Finally, it is worth noting that reaction rates can be expressed per unit mass of catalyst, per unit catalytic surface, per unit external particle area or per unit volume of the reactor, fluid or catalyst. For chemical reactor design it is best to express reaction rates in terms of unit catalyst volume. [Pg.91]

CHEMICAL KINETICS OF CATALYZED REACTIONS Surface reaction Desorption... [Pg.92]

Bond (1987) covers the basic principles of catalysis, adsorption on solid surfaces, chemisorption at metal and oxide surfaces, the kinetics of catalyzed reactions, the quantitative aspects of catalysis by metals and the structure, preparation and use of heterogeneous catalysts. The book also discusses the application of catalysts in different fields including energy conservation, production of hydrocarbon feedstocks, bifunctional catalysts in petroleum industry, oxidation catalysts in the petrochemical industry, heavy inorganic industry, hydrogenation of multiple bonds and catalysts used in atmospheric pollution control. [Pg.281]
