The effect of concentration of free (molecular) ammonia on the activity of the electrolyte was derived mainly from two 80 C data points of Miles and Wilson having 16 to 17 molal free ammonia concentration. Data points below 0.2 ionic strength were fitted by application of Kielland s estimation of ionic activity coefficients(6 2). Details are presented elsewhere(45), together with graphs giving partial pressures of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide for temperatures from 80 to 260 F over a range of liquid concentration.

In isolated rat hepatocytes obtained from acetone- or phenobarbital-treated rats, the metabolism of toluene at low (below 100 pM) or high (100-500 pM) concentration was increased, in particular after phenobarbital treatment. Ethanol (7 and 60 mM) inhibited the overall metabolism of toluene (sum of benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid and hippuric acid), leading to accumulation of benzyl alcohol (Smith-Kielland Ripel, 1993).

The method for the evaluation of Kb uses the so-called Kielland plots, that is, a plot of In Kc versus XA, which is practically feasible, since aA and ab, the ion activities in the electrolytic solution, and XA and Xb, the equivalent fractions of exchangeable ions A and B in the zeolite, can be experimentally measured. On the contrary, aA and ab cannot be measured.
