Iso Propyl chloride

Allyl chloride [107-05-1 ]M 76.5, b 45.1°, d 0.939, n 1.4130. Likely impurities include 2-chloropropene, propyl chloride, iso-propyl chloride, 3,3-dichloropropane, 1,2-dichloropropane and 1,3-dichloropropane. Purified by washing with cone HCl, then with Na2CO3 soln, drying with CaCh, and distn through an efficient column [Oae and Vanderwerf JACS 75 2724 7955]. 

Other alkyl chlorides may be prepared by this general procedure.12 The following yields are obtained with some of the common alcohols, used in the molecular proportions given under the procedure ii-propyl chloride, 55-61 per cent iso-propyl chloride, 70-76 per cent sec.-butyl chloride, 60-65 Per cent 2-chloropentane, 60-70 per cent. 

When iso-propyl chloride was used instead of -propyl chloride under the same reaction conditions as above, / o-propyldichlorosilane and other low boiling compounds were obtained (Eq. 6). 

At various temperatures ranging from 200 to 300 °C, fso-propyldichloro-silane was obtained in the highest yield at 220 °C, but decreased as the reaction temperature increased due to the decomposition of iso-propyl chloride. Under these reaction conditions, the yield of fso-propyldichloro-silane was higher compared to those obtained from the direct reaction without hydrogen chloride addition, indicating that the decomposition of iso-propyl chloride was suppressed as expected. The yields generally increased with increased ratios of hydrogen chloride to /so-propyl chloride.

There is another sort of polymerization process used to produce viscous polypropylene. The reactor is a refrigerated kettle evaporator where the reaction takes place in the liquid phase. The catalyst was iso-propyl-chloride. The polypropylene product was used by Texaco in the 1960s as an engine top cylinder lubricant, added to gasoline.
