Is Natural Gas Toxic

This has been a wonderful bit of musing thus far, but the history books of space exploration give reason for some more explanations. At 10.35 PM (Moscow time) on Febraaiy 23, 1997, there was a major fire aboard the Russian Mir space station. All of the six-membered American-German-Russian crew had to take part in fighting the fire, which took about 90 s—at least according to the official records. It took about a day to get rid of the last bits of smoke formed in this fire, the astronauts had to wear gas masks for hours. Is there a mistake somewhere in the previous line of thinking  [Pg.283]

Aboard the International Space Station, the fire alarm has sounded twice, erroneously on both occasions. On September 18, 2006, a bit of solid material found its way into the oxygen supply system and eaused the false alarm. On June 14, 2007, the eventnal cause was a eomputer error. [Pg.283]

In a eonunon seene from films, but unfoitunately sometimes in real life, people try to oommit suieide by opening the gas valve. If someone attempts this, it is not only evidence of a speetacular ehemieal misconception, but also endangers the lives of others. Nowadays, gas in the pipeline is not poisonous, but above a certain amount, it forms an explosive mixture with air. The spark triggering the explosion is usually not initiated by the person attempting the suicide, but an unfortunate neighbor or dehvery persom [Pg.283]

A drawback to the nse of methane and ethane is that they cannot be economically transported in a gas cylinder. Two other gases, propane and butane, are suitable for this sort of transportation. Their mixture is called LPG gas (liquefied petroleum gas), and it is extensively nsed in remote or underdeveloped locations where gas cannot be obtained from the pipehnes. The main components of LPG are odorless as well, and foul-smelling additives are used in the cylinders for safety. [Pg.284]
