The ir spectra acquired in this way are extremely sensitive to the orientation of the surface molecules. Molecules must have a significant component of a molecular vibration perpendicular to the surface to be sensed by coupling with the highly directional electric field. Molecules whose dipole moments are perfectly parallel to the surface caimot couple to the existing electric fields, and therefore, are ir transparent by this method. This selectivity of the approach for molecule dipole moments perpendicular as opposed to parallel to the surface is known as the surface selection rule of irras. [Pg.288]

RISKMAN is an integrated Microsoft Windows , personal computer software system for [H. i forming quantitative risk analysis. Used for PSAs for aerospace, nuclear power, and chemical [iroccsses, it has five main modules Data Analysis, Systems Analysis, External Events Analysis, Event Tree Analysis, and Important Sequences. There are also modules for software system maintenance, backup, restoration, software updates, printer font, and page control. PEG has also integrated the fault tree programs CAFTA, SETS, NRCCUT, and IRRAS into RISKMAN. [Pg.143]

The Systems Module constructs and displays fault trees using EASYFLOW which aic read automatically to generate minimal cutsets that can be transferred, for solution, to SETS. Recent work in our laboratory has shown that Fourier Transform Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (FT-IRRAS) can be used routinely to measure vibrational spectra of a monolayer on a low area metal surface. To achieve sensitivity and resolution, a pseudo-double beam, polarization modulation technique was integrated into the FT-IR experiment. We have shown applicability of FT-IRRAS to spectral measurements of surface adsorbates in the presence of a surrounding infrared absorbing gas or liquid as well as measurements in the UHV. We now show progress toward situ measurement of thermal and hydration induced conformational changes of adsorbate structure. The design of the cell and some preliminary measurements will be discussed. [Pg.435]

To achieve surface selectivity in our studies of low area metal catalyzed reactions, we have developed FT-IRRAS techniques for the in situ study of surface adsorbates. With these methods, we are making progress toward examination of complex reactions. [Pg.447]
