There have been a few other experimental set-ups developed for the IR characterization of surfaces. Photoacoustic (PAS), or, more generally, photothemial IR spectroscopy relies on temperature fluctuations caused by irradiating the sample with a modulated monocliromatic beam the acoustic pressure wave created in the gas layer adjacent to the solid by the adsorption of light is measured as a fiinction of photon wavelength... 

Chinese Herbal Medicines. Many traditional Chinese medicines have been screened for radioprotective activity in experimental animals. In one study of more than a thousand Chinese herbs, a number of agents increased the survival rate of dogs exposed to a lethal dose of y-rays by 30—40%, and some symptoms of radiation injury were ameHorated. These effects are potentially related to stimulation of the hemopoietic and immune systems (130). Extracts of five Chinese dmg plants, as weU as aspirin, effectively protected mice exposed to 7.5—8.0 Gy (750—800 rad) of y-radiation, and increased survival rates by 8—50% (131). Several Chinese traditional medicines, adininistered ip before or after irradiation, protected against Hpid peroxidation in a variety of mouse tissues, including BM, Hver, and spleen, as weU as in mouse Hver microsomal suspensions irradiated in vitro (132). 

Experimental data taken from the chlorination of toluene in a continuous stirred tank flow reactor at 111°C and irradiated with light of 500 nm wavelength yield a product distribution shown in Table 1 (1). 

External Control. The use of external control to govern the release of dmgs from dehvery systems has largely been experimental. A number of mechanisms have been explored, and include external sources such as electrical currents, magnetism, ultrasound, temperature changes, and irradiation. 

The progressive ordering from the surface to the center has been experimentally observed in the case of the electron irradiation-induced formation of the quasi-spherical onion-like particles[25]. In this case, the large inner hollow space is unstable under electron bombardment, and a compact particle (innermost shell C( ) is the final result of the graphitization of the carbon volume (see Fig. 3e-h). 

The HFBR at Brookhaven National Laboratory is a heavy water moderated and cooled reactor designed to provide an intense beam of neutrons to the experimental area. In addition using thimbles i oiitaincd within the vessel, it provides isotopic production, neutron activation analysis, ami muiemi irradiations. It began operation in 1965 at a power of 40 MW to be upgraded to 60 MW m 19S2. 

A preferable experimental arrangement, which eliminates both of the above disadvantages, is the so-called frequency-sweep N.M.D.R. experiment. Here H0 is kept constant at all times, o>2 is located on the center of the resonance to be irradiated and then the spectrum is observed by slowly sweeping o>i through the spectrum. Since a>2 remains at all times on the center of the resonance to be decoupled, this experiment enables one to remove simultaneously all of the couplings caused by that particular resonance. All of the experiments discussed below were performed under these conditions.
