Iron bromide

An alternative method, which does not involve the formation of bromate, is treatment of iron turnings with a 35 wt % aqueous solution of bromine. Ferrosoferric bromide, Fe3Brg T6H2O, forms and can be crystallized. The iron bromide is heated to a boil with a slight excess of 15 wt % potassium carbonate solution.

Organic disulfides and chloroorganic compounds in boundary lubrication conditions form iron sulfide (AHf = -1.04 eV), iron chloride (AHf = -3.54 eV), or iron bromide (AHf = -2.59 eV), which decrease wear and protect against seizure. Some chlorinated and brominated hydrocarbons in the presence of DBDS produce strong synergism in severe conditions involving lubrication in metal cutting (McCarroll et al., 1978 Mould at al., 1973 Plaza, 1989 Plaza et al., 1993 Sakuri etal., 1967).

Derivation Solutions of iron bromide and potassium carbonate are mixed and heated, the solution filtered and concentrated, and the bromide crystallized out. 

The Lewis acids typically used are aluminum chloride (AICI3) and iron chloride (FeCIa) for chlorination, and iron bromide (FeBts) for bromination. The purpose of the Lewis acid is to make the halogen a stronger electrophile. A mechanism for electrophilic aromatic bromination is shown here.

More recently, co-catalysts, including iron bromide and nitrate complexes, were found for the catalytic air-based oxidation chemistry in Fig. 13.1 [44]. When these co-catalysts are combined with the appropriate POM (frequently [CuPWii039l ) potent redox cycles for organic oxidations in addition to the cycle given in Fig. 13.1 are introduced and overall air-based oxidation rates increase. 

For example, acetylene adds bromine to yield CHBr CHBr and eventually CHBr2-CHBr2- Benzene, with an iron bromide catalyst, suffers displacement of one of its hydrogen atoms to yield C H5Br. This type of activity in which substitution reactions occur indicates that benzene might be saturated.
