Iron billings

About 20% of the total import bill of a country like Britain is spent on engineering materials. Table 2.2 shows how this spend is distributed. Iron and steel, and the raw materials used to make them, account for about a quarter of it. Next are wood and lumber - still widely used in light construction. More than a quarter is spent on the metals copper, silver, aluminium and nickel. All polymers taken together, including rubber, account for little more than 10%. If we include the further metals zinc, lead, tin, tungsten and mercury, the list accounts for 99% of all the money spent abroad on materials, and we can safely ignore the contribution of materials which do not appear on it. [Pg.17]

Some basic BW treatment objectives include keeping boiler surfaces clean and corrosion-free to minimize fuel bills and managing variable quality FW smoothly and efficiently to limit upsets and other downstream problems. But the nature of potential boiler deposition problems changes with increases in pressure and, simply put, is primarily concerned with a reduction in simple, hardness-related deposits and an increase in complex, iron oxide deposits. The effect of dirty boilers on fuel costs can be seen in Figure 10.4. [Pg.455]

The reason why Fischer succeeded with the preparation of Cr(C6H6)2 and Wilkinson did not, is a noteworthy facet of the bis(benzene)chromium story. In his Recollections of the First Four Months, Wilkinson recalled that shortly after William (Bill) Mofifit, a young theoretician, came to Harvard in autumn of 1952, he asked him what was the chance of benzene binding to a transition metal [6]. After a few days, Mofifit came back arguing that such an arrangement should not be stable since it would readily decompose to solid metal, e.g., chromium and stable benzene molecules. As Wilkinson had, in his own words, implicit faith in theoretical chemists at that time , he forgot all about it and went on with cyclopentadienyl metal chemistry. It was, as he ironically mentioned in 1975, the first of more than one interesting experience with theoretical chemists [6]. [Pg.138]
