Iridate

Titanium tetrachloride is used to iridize glass. This compound fumes strongly in air and has been used to produce smoke screens.

The efficient hydrogenation of various benzene compounds in biphasic systems has also been described by similar surfactant-protected irid-ium(O) nanoparticles [47]. Xalatan (latanoprost) is a prostaglandin analogue, which increases the uvoscleral outflow, thereby decreasing the intraocular pressure. The drops, which are applied once daily, preferably in the evening, may cause eye discoloration especially in patients with mixed colour irides.

The compound is corrosive to skin. Inhalation of its vapors can produce upper respiratory tract irritation, shghtly delayed abdominal pain, and loss of appetite (Taylor, P. J. 1966. Brit. J. Irid. Med., 23, p. 318). 

When recovered from the mineral osmiridium, the mineral is fused with zinc to convert it into a zinc alloy. The alloy is then treated with hydrochloric acid to dissolve the zinc away leaving a finely divided material. This finely divided sohd then is fused with sodium peroxide and caustic soda to convert osmium and ruthenium into their water-soluble sodium salts, sodium osmate and sodium iridate, respectively. While osmium is fully converted to osmate salt, most ruthemium and a small part of iridium are converted to ruthenate and iridate, respectively. The fused mass is leached with water to separate metals from sohd residues.
