Molecular dynamics ionization reactions

GH Theory was originally developed to describe chemical reactions in solution involving a classical nuclear solute reactive coordinate x. The identity of x will depend of course on the reaction type, i.e., it will be a separation coordinate in an SnI unimolecular ionization and an asymmetric stretch in anSN2 displacement reaction. To begin our considerations, we can picture a reaction free energy profile in the solute reactive coordinate x calculated via the potential of mean force Geq(x) -the system free energy when the system is equilibrated at each fixed value of x, which would be the output of e.g. equilibrium Monte Carlo or Molecular Dynamics calculations [25] or equilibrium integral equation methods [26], Attention then focusses on the barrier top in this profile, located at x. ... [Pg.233]

Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations for neutral and ionized phenol-water clusters are reported. The results for [C6H50D-(H20)4],+ illustrate how the PT dynamics is coupled to fluctuations of the solvent. The kinetics of PT/recombination in [C6H50D-(H20)4] + clusters is related to strong fluctuations of the electrostatic field of the water molecules and this relationship points out the relevance of investigating the electronic properties of the HB network for understanding chemical reaction in solution. [Pg.131]

Since the pioneering experiments of Chupka and coworkers, which employed single-photon VUV ionization of molecular hydrogen to prepare with a specific amount of vibrational excitation, the field of study of ion-molecule reaction dynamics with vibrationally state-selected reactants has experienced a number of advances. Another important system in the history of ion-molecule reactions is the hydrogen atom transfer process (47) ... [Pg.192]

Undoubtedly, the technique most suited to tackle polyatomic multichannel reactions is the crossed molecular beam (CMB) scattering technique with mass spectrometric detection and time-of-flight (TOF) analysis. This technique, based on universal electron-impact (El) ionization coupled with a quadrupole mass filter for mass selection, has been central in the investigation of the dynamics of bimolecular reactions during the past 35 years.1,9-11 El ionization affords, in principle, a universal detection method for all possible reaction products of even a complex reaction exhibiting multiple reaction pathways. Although the technique is not usually able to provide state-resolved information, especially on a polyatomic... [Pg.331]
